Abstract

Currency derivatives are financial instruments whose value is derived from the exchange rates of underlying currencies. These instruments play a vital role in managing foreign exchange risk, facilitating international trade, and improving market efficiency in global financial markets. The increasing globalization of business operations has exposed companies, financial institutions, and investors to currency fluctuations, making currency derivatives an essential risk management tool. The major types of currency derivatives include currency forwards, futures, options, and swaps, each offering unique features and benefits for hedging and speculative purposes. HDFC Bank, being one of India's leading private sector banks, actively participates in the currency derivatives market by providing various foreign exchange products and services to corporate clients, exporters, importers, and investors. Through these instruments, the bank helps its customers mitigate exchange rate risks and optimize their financial performance. Currency derivatives also contribute to market liquidity, price discovery, and efficient allocation of financial resources. This study explores the various types of currency derivatives, their applications in risk management and investment strategies, and their significance in the functioning of global financial markets. It further examines the role of HDFC Bank in facilitating currency derivative transactions and supporting clients in managing foreign exchange exposure. The findings highlight that effective utilization of currency derivatives enhances financial stability, protects profitability, and promotes sustainable growth in an increasingly interconnected global economy.
